A Gem of a Day

Lian Ed and I had the privilege of witnessing the recognition day of Diamond Day Care Center in Marikina. This was a preschool situated at the bank of Marikina River which overflowed during Typhoon Ondoy’s fury. The whole barangay was flooded to a fatal depth of nearly ten feet, submerging most of the houses and the community’s two-storey social hall where the day care held classes.

You may recall that we (our family and you) helped Diamond Day Care Center get back to normalcy by bringing them school supplies, books, toys and educational materials. Our family decided to continue helping this preschool after relief work in the area came to an end. We wanted to help them in whatever means for we believe that there were even greater needs—these children and their parents need to know Jesus in a personal way and this could happen through the love shown to their community.

It was a joy to see the little children smiling and happy as they gave special numbers and received their awards with their beaming parents in the audience. It was a totally different picture from when we first visited them in November when their homes, school and countenance still bore the marks of the devastating flood.

Teacher Leah Ramos, the day care’s main teacher and directress, sent me this heart-warming email of gratitude. I am certain that she would want all of you to receive the thanks that her tears on graduation day and this email wish to convey:

Last April 8, 2010 we had our 5th Annual Recognition Day. It should have been just like any other Recognition Day. But it was not. This one was different. This school year was different from any other school years we had. For this year we started well and strong, so blessed with 65 pupils officially enrolled.

Then the greatest trial of the year came—Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana)! The rage of typhoon Ondoy and its aftermath has devastated most of us, in so many ways and many aspects of our life. Yet, God has His ways of helping us out. Through those people who have made themselves be a vessel of blessings.

You have helped us be lifted from the deep mud of great challenges. And that we may move on with our lives and that those daycare kids may continue their studies.

Thanks to all of you! Thanks for helping us out! Thanks for the prayers too!

And I am proud to report that we have 42 pupils who made it through the very end of the school year. This has proved that no matter how great the trial was, it would never be a hindrance to finish our studies.

In behalf of the parents and the children of DIAMOND DAY CARE CENTER, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to all of you. You will always be a part of us. A big thanks to all of you!

Sincerely yours,
Teacher Leah
