Bucana Update #3: Feeding the 1,500 (Phase 1 of the Immediate Relief Aid)
Our team’s immediate relief response to the need in Bucana is to put together a Feeding Program that will run for 14 days. Out of the 80 houses that our team (MUPT-TDP) serves, only 10 survived the razing. We were told that about 118 houses were leveled to ashes in two barangays. This meant that as far as our area of ministry is concerned, there are about 320 families in dire need of immediate relief at the moment. That’s about 1,500 individuals!
With the initial relief fund sent by OMF Philippines of Php 20,000 (US$428.27) and an additional Php3,000 (US$64.24) from a concerned individual, we were able to put together the initial plans for the Feeding Program that is good for three supper times beginning tomorrow (May 29, 2007) evening. We would need Php 7,600 (US$162.75) per day to feed 320 families (Php23.75 or US$51cents/family). That’s a total of Php83,600 (US$1,790.15) for the remaining 11 days. The cost for cooking gas, plastic plates (one for each family) and gasoline for the jeep are not included in this computation. That means an additional Php2,000-Php3,000 (US$43-45).
We would also need Php5,000 (US$107) to make the temporary center for food & relief distribution. It could also serve as kitchen for the community women who would be mobilized to cook the food (the team would do the marketing and bring the food items to Bucana). This center would be fenced in by bamboos and would be shaded by a tent made of rice sacks. The makeshift center would be built by the men in the team together with some community volunteers first thing tomorrow morning.
Please pray:
1. For God to provide the needed amount of money to feed 1,500 people in 14 days until they can slowly rebuild their lives and means of livelihood.
2. For the community volunteers to be mobilized despite their own needs at this time. Pray that the believers in the community will show visibility and unity.
3. For the team’s physical, emotional and spiritual health amidst all these. Each one has his/her way of coping. Please pray that we can ably serve the people by God’s leading and grace.
4. For orderliness to be maintained during food distribution.
