Habagat

Below is an excerpt from our teammate (and former strategy coordinator) Emo Yango's email regarding the challenge our team and the communities we serve currently face--monsoon waves or habagat.

"While the climate in Davao City is pretty constant throughout the whole year (no typhoon season), Davao Gulf goes through seasonal monsoon waves. This means that while the rest of the city is baking in warm weather, monsoon waves are battering the shorelines of Davao. Only when the waters from the waves begin to flood the nearest main street is the monsoon waves noticeable to the public.

"We thought these monsoon waves have come and gone last May. We should have known the waves strike in August, just like the last time 2-story tidal waves wiped out some 30-plus houses in Bucana in 2001.

"Welcome to "ground hog day" five years later. The waves are back and stronger. Over 50 houses along the shorelines of Bucana have been wiped out. This does not include the other nearby communities.

"Pray for the team as our workers provide relief help, encouragement and some sense of hope --- once again. Once the chaos subside, people will build again on the same spot as where their previous house was wiped out. Fortunately, no lives were lost.

"Please pray for resources the team needs to provide relief help for those left homeless, hungry and only wet clothes on their back. Canned foods, dry fish, bags of rice, sleeping mats, noodles, used clothing are the staples we would like to share as part of our relief effort in the communities of Bucana and Isla Verde. We are looking to serve 500 people as soon as we can gather all our resources."
