Update on Papa

Update on Pastor Ed Gaston—03/01/08

Test results revealed that the interococcus bacteria (a common bacteria usually found in stools and urine) lodged on his spine. Yes, we were also wondering how it went up to the spine. Dr. Gigi Cruz (a friend of ours) explained that it’s possible that the bacteria reached the blood stream thereby making it all the way up to his neck. That would have been a case of sepsis…which could have actually killed Papa. But Papa’s resistance was strong enough to counter it until now. He is currently on high dosage of antibiotics being given intravenously. The doctor wants him confined to the hospital for another week. This is to further contain the infection because though the bacteria causing it is a common one, the area where it is concentrated is very delicate.

The diagnostic surgery done a few days ago revealed that his C6 (disc in the neck area) is not in a good condition. This actually boggled our minds because Papa has never complained of pain when in fact his conditioned should have brought him excruciating pain because his bone has significantly degenerated. This being the case, he would have to stay in Manila for a longer time. Rehabilitation to strengthen the muscles of the neck is recommended. But corrective surgery in the neck would have to be postponed until he is cleared of the bacterial infection.

Another doctor friend, Dr. Marie Lim, reflected on what happened to Papa and reminded us of God’s wisdom and love: Perhaps the Lord allowed that common bacteria to lodge in Pastor Ed’s neck and cause this problem so we would know that he has a slipped disc there. Otherwise, it would have been very dangerous if he were up in the mountains of Mindanao and the disc suddenly snaps causing instant paralysis. And we wouldn’t be able to do anything about it.
